Therapeutic mattresses have been famous especially to the hospitals. These mattresses give relief and many health benefits to the patient that’s why most hospital beds are therapeutic. There are now powered and non-powered therapeutic mattresses. These mattresses have many layers that have different purposes like pressure redistribution.
These mattresses are high-density to provide comfort to the patients. Some of them have center posture zone that can redistribute the pressure. The illnesses that the mattresses can cure or prevent are pressure ulcer, body pains, and sore body parts. They can also prevent pulmonary complications to develop so the patients that need to stay in bed for long time will not experience additional illnesses.
Non-powered mattresses are usually for low maintenance therapy only but there are non-powered mattresses designed for maximum therapy. These mattresses can provide shear management and pressure redistribution more intense compared to those with low maintenance therapy. There are also non-powered mattresses that are self-adjusting depending on the patients body so all patients can use the mattresses. They usually respond to the pressure change done by the patients’ body and automatically adjust to redistribute the pressure between the mattress and the body.
Powered mattresses have usually rotation feature than can help prevent the pulmonary complication that the patient can develop. They also have sensors that measure the patients’ weight and automatically adjust the mattress to prevent the development of bedsores especially when the patient needs to be in bed for a long time. This is done by inflating or deflating the part of the mattress that can redistribute the pressure so the body part that needs more pressure will receive more pressure and the part that needs less pressure receives less pressure. Since these types of mattresses are automatic, there is lesser nursing need for the patients. There are also some mattresses that help relieve sore shoulders, lower back pain, and sore feet. They usually have heat-releasing zones that target the main body parts affected. The mattresses also can prevent skin macerations due to the low air loss. Since they are powered mattresses that have circuits within the mattress, they usually have auto-shut off to prevent excess heat or pressure or exposure to the therapeutic features of the mattresses.
Some of the mattresses are urethan based to ensure the stability of the mattress. Some mattresses are also made of viscoelastic foam for the top layer that are heat sensitive and can reshape around the body when they have an interaction. This viscoelastic top layer ensures that the body receives real comfort when using the bed. This helps the prevention of muscle and joint pains especially when the patient has to lie down for quite a long time.
Therapeutic mattresses provide the patients’ needs and can cure some illnesses like pressure ulcer and body pains.
